It has 20 bunks and the category of Backcountry Hut.The first of 3 Kime Huts in the immediate vicinity. Building of the Tararua Tramping Club-owned, public hut began in Jan., 1930 by Joe Gibbs, 17-year old Ralph Bawden, Bill Lyons & Wally Neill. The first load of material was transported in via pack-horses Bess, Ben & Whitey, under the close eye of Bill Boyle (Bess) & Wally Neill (Ben & Whitey). It cost £525 & was officially opened on 1 June, 1930. It was named after Esmond Kime, who in June, 1922, survived 5 nights out in the open despite bad frostbite. He was rescued from the Beehives & carried back to Alpha Hut, where he died. It was removed in December, 1977, when Kime Hut No. 2 was due to be built.Location:
