Built by the NZFS in 1967 as a S70 6-bunk design with an open fire & an added alcove area at one end. Designated for removal by DOC in 2004, strong public opposition saw the hut saved. Late Nov., 2023, saw a team of BCT builders & volunteers replace the piles. Mid Jan., 2024, saw DOC remove the large trees from the front of the hut, allowing more light in, followed by 6 volunteers, Garth Hazel, John Hutt & Markus Milne, & builders Matt Hewat, Phil Ellis & Max Stenhouse-Burgess, who completely refit the interior, increasing bunk numbers to 10. They repainted the hut, installed new windows, replaced the open fire with a woodburner, & built a woodshed. The latter works was thanks to a generous bequest by the Henwood family of Dunedin, in honour of their late mother. Edit Hut
Thanks to the Henwood family generous donation and BCT plus the team that worked hard to upgrade this hut.
I’ve looked after this hut for the last 20 odd years but now with this work the TA trail users and Kiwi trampers it will be appreciated for many more years to enjoy this beaut spot.cheers
