Notes
Built in the summer of 1971-72, it is named after George Lockwood, who had a strong association with the Christchurch Ski Club, Arthur’s Pass NP Board, NZAC & the CMC. In 2009, DOC proposed the shelter be demolished due a lack of funding. This left a sour taste in the mouth of the public & in 2012, the CMC took over management, despite limited funds for maintenance. Due to lead nails & lead ridging being identified as putting kea at risk, the shelter was re-roofed in the summer of 2023-24, by Hugo Young, Tommy Maru, Matai MacGarth, & builder, Aaron Gillespie.
