It has 8 bunks and the category of Backcountry Hut.Built in 1898 by D. Riddle (from Fairlie), M. le Sueur; a stonemason, Otto Cook (son-in-law of the Hermitage manager, Macdonald) & Jim Loomes. Originally called 'Brodrick Hut' after Timaru district surveyor, T.N. Broderick who chose the site, it was changed to Malte Brun Hut to reflect its location. It had two rooms of four bunks, including a 'ladies' room & measured 4m x 5m. In 1902 a 3-burner kerosene stove was installed due to a lack of vegetation. 1903 saw the addition of spouting, a water barrel & toilet. The hut was replaced in 1930-31.
