It has 36 bunks and the category of Backcountry Hut.Built in 1930-31 by Arthur Lukey (carpenter) & Dick Dingwell (engineer) due to increasing numbers of visitors. It was located 100m south of the original hut. It had 3 rooms, two of which were 18-bed bunk-rooms with a kitchen in between. In 1949 the hut was rebuilt by Bert Barley & moved 3m closer to the moraine wall due to snow build-up behind the hut. In 1961 9-bunks were removed & the kitchen enlarged. In Nov. 1978 the Mt Cook National Park Board closed the hut due to on-going subsidence. It was demolished & burnt on-site in Feb. 1979. B&W photo Hillary & Lowe (Jan. 1951): Historyextra.
