It has 20 bunks and the category of Great Walk Hut.Built in 1972 by Jeremy Collyns & co., it is a 'Great Walks' hut. This is the third of three Mangatepopo Huts in the vicinity. The first hut was built in 1918. The second was built circa 1927, lasting until 1979 when it was demolished. Due to on-going vandalism at the second hut, the car park was moved back to where it is currently. Over Anzac weekend, 2026, in a joint project, DOC staff & volunteers from the Backcountry Trust repainted the exterior in trying autumnal conditions.Location:

Snowing when we visited which was magical for the kids. Had planned to stay the night, but unfortunately at about 5pm a group of about 30 high school boys and teachers turned up. The boys were respectful and impressive with their resilience of some of them pitching their tents in the snow. 2 of the teachers/supervisors were accommodating and friendly, but one was arrogant & entitled and unfortunately ruined our plans to stay overnight with his attitude. Too used to telling kids what to do and thought he could get bossy with us. Bad example for those boys with his lack of manners. So we walked out and stayed in Turangi instead. Would love to visit in the snow again, the afternoon there was amazing. Hut was warm and comfy.

Dinky wee hut in comparison to other Great Walk huts, but very comfortable and amazing views. The sunset we had seemed to last for hours

Nice views of the mountains spent lunch time at the hut 1.7kms walk from the car park makes for an easy overnight walk, or there and back walk. Be sure to check the weather

Beautiful hut, well looked after. Fire was easy to start, plenty of firewood. Lights were a major bonus. Our first serviced hut, and a major upgrade from basic huts.
