It has 12 bunks and the category of Backcountry Hut.Demolished in 1979. It was the second of three Mangatepopo Huts in the area. It was built circa 1927 & in 1958 the Mangatepopo Rd was constructed to the hut door, leading to vandalism. When the third hut was built (1974) the car park was moved 15 minutes down the valley & the road revegetated. No. 2 hut was made of corrugated iron with two bunkrooms. I spent three nights here in Jan. 1975, exploring the Tama Lakes & Tongariro. In fine conditions we went up to South Crater & over Tongariro. We had the volcano entirely to ourselves. Two other's climbed Ngauruhoe on one of these days. Location:
