Building began in March, 2006 & was completed in May, 2006. It was built by James Coubrough & co. to replace the original, NZFS, 1962-built hut. Some of the photos show 'Maungahuka Hut (old)' still standing, but dwarfed by the new hut. Edit Hut

Beautiful views when not cloudy, and stays reasonably warm considering the lack of a fire due to the shelter of the hill and peak next to it. Worth the sketchy (at times) approach from the Tararua Peaks side!
