By 1924, local fisherman Jim McEwan was the only resident left, doing until the late 1930's. In 1965, still in private ownership, it was gazetted a wildlife refuge. The former NZ Wildlife Service of the Department of Internal Affairs, on behalf of the Crown, purchased the island from the Orchard family in 1984.Location:
