It has 8 bunks and the category of Backcountry Hut.Built in 1948, it is constructed from beech-pole framing & an earth floor. Late May, 2022, saw Brian Maplesden, Robin Oliver (both ex NZFS), James Robertson & Ken Turkington complete some historic rectification work. They re-roofed it with new malthoid, removed the existing cladding, rewrapped it in new malthoid & put the cladding back on, including new native timber cladding to replace the rotten stuff. They replaced the top plate at the front of the hut & the bottom plate at the back of the hut from timber sourced on site. Drainage was installed around the base of the hut & run into a soak pit. A cowl atop the chimney was installed & the chimney flashing fortified. Local tohunga whakairo (master carvers) Nathan Foote & Phil Belcher hand adze the timber in the original style of the hut.Location:

Awesome historical hut. A bit of rat poo, no water, bituman makes your head spin, but history back to ya ya.

I visited on the 3 July 2021 and to reach the hut you first go to the new Manson hut where a track (with a sign) leads to this hut. As of writing this comment this is different to the map. (though who knows maybe I walked past another track)
