In 2005, DOC extensively renovated the hut interior, including full ply lining, new bunks, a stainless bench, a ply table, benches, & aluminium window frames. Access is via Backyards Rd. There's a carpark for 2WD vehicles up the road and you can drive a further 5km to the 4WD carpark near the footbridge over the Otamatapaio River. From here it's 10km further to the hut.

I fossicked in the matagouri and along the river bank and quickly got enough small stuff to fill a Taley's fish bin equivalent. Not that we needed a fire but there wasn't a skerrick of wood at the hut for the next party.

The hut's interior was fully renovated in 2005 with a full ply lining, new bunks, a stainless bench, a ply table and benches, aluminium window frames, and the next year a wood burner. Of course, there's no wood anywhere near. Mostly used by hunters but not frequently used.
