It has 8 bunks and the category of Standard Hut.Built by Kennecotts, & Lime & Marble in the late 1960s, & taken over in 1973 by CASSAIR, a Canadian asbestos mining company, who had at least 5 huts on site in the late 1960's / 1970's. Bruce Reay reports there was a big kitchen block with a damaged Bell 47G rotor blade mounted on the wall, & there was a shed containing drill core samples. He added one of the huts at 'Barrier Camp (Red Stream Huts)' was shifted to the 'Pyke Mining Camp Huts' in the summer of 1976/77. Bruce reports here, & at 'Barrier Camp (Red Stream Huts)', workers slept in 10x10ft square tents pitched on a wooden floor base. Frank Pepers, NZFS reports in 1979, they cut two of the bunkhouses in half & 3 Lama helicopter loads made it to Big Bay for the basis of 'Big Bay Hut', but the load that had the batts & louvre windows was too heavy & it got dropped in the Pyke Gorge. Bruce McDowell reports the remaining 2 huts, the cookhouse & another building, were burnt down in February, 2007.Location:
