It has 8 bunks and the category of Standard Hut.Built & used by CASSAIR, a Canadian asbestos mining company, who had 5 huts on site in the late 1960's / 1970's. 3 of the 5 huts were broken down by the NZFS & reassembled as Big Bay Hut, while 2 huts were left on site, including a shed with racks of drilled-rock core samples from the 1970's. On the wall inside the main hut hung a damaged helicopter rotor blade from a Bell 47G. The 2 huts & the core-sample shed were burnt down by DOC in February, 2007. CASSAIR also bulldozed an airstrip on the slopes below Junction Hill (above Gorge River) & bulldozed a road on the true left of the Cascade River.Location:
