It has 6 bunks and the category of Private Hut.Built by Radford & Hunt in 1866 for CharlesTripp. It is made out of local river stone & felled timbers, with a thatched roof & earthen floor. The thatched roof was replaced with corrugated iron, & a wooden floor built in the early 1900’s. In 2001 the damaged chimney & collapsed north end were resurrected & re-plastered, & the inside lined with timber for warmth. Sutherland’s Hut is New Zealand’s oldest surviving hut, having stood the test of time remarkably well. It is a private hut on the commercially operated 'Four Peaks High Country Track' run by Four Peaks Station owners, Steve & Jo McAtamney.Location:
