It was built late 1967/ early 1968 according to Arthur Taylor (NZFS ranger in charge of the area for 12 years from 1968). Most NZFS huts built in Te Urewera went up from 1968 onwards. It replaced a primitive short-lived hut. Te U No. 2 was a basic NZFS cullers’ biv with an open fire & chimney. Graeme Fisher (NZFS) recalls cutting the track from the Waiotahi valley to Te U Biv, & the Nga Tapuwae O Taneatua Tramping Club archives reveal a planned trip to the biv in 1969, so they knew it existed.Location:
