A hut was first proposed for the area in 1956, with the site chosen by NZFS field officers Evan Meredith & Des Torrance. In early 1958, a tent site was set up & 14 loads of materials were parachuted in by fixed wing airplane. It was built in one week in February, 1958, by NZFS bush carpenters Jan van de Lagemaat, Des Torrance & Bob Norton. It was built before hut construction was standardised & as such, it has its own uniqueness. In 1977, a porch was built over the door by Tom Dodds & Willie Abel, using second hand materials, to stop the winter snow building up in the doorway. It was painted 'Rescue Orange' in 2012 by DOC.
