Originally, a staff hut at Scollay’s Flat on the southern end of the Tin Range, for work on the Kakapo programme, it was shifted in the late 1980’s. Staff used an army Iroquois helicopter to transport the hut to the sand pass, but unfortunately the last load tore the guts out of the chopper, sprinkling timber from 2000 feet into the Freshwater - Bensons Peak area. March, 2021, saw a joint DOC & Back Country Trust project, complete some long-overdue maintenance with a new wood burner installed & two coats of paint applied to the exterior. Edit Hut
A cool spot on what seems like the top of a 220m sand dune. A bit dark and dank, the windows need a good clean! Could do with a bit of a vege trim around the hut
