Built by the Horowhenua Hunting Club in March, 2002. It is the second of two Burn huts & this is located further south along the ridge from the original hut. See 'Burn Hut (old)'. Early March, 2021, saw 5 volunteers from the Horowhenua Hunting Club install new windows & some cladding. It was repainted & the interior ‘spring-cleaned’. Early, 2022, saw a team from RuapehuWorX, scrub-bar the northern route to the hut & a majority of the southern route. Mid March, 2024, saw Allan McComb, & Jay & Leyton Gedye, repair, clean & refit the toilet, replace the cladding, & replace the water tank tie-downs. Edit Hut
Loved walking over the massive Mangahao dam no 2 at the start! Awesome views on the northern half of the loop track, and cool ascent up onto the tops before dropping down onto the hut.
We completed the loop via the southern half of the loop via the river and Mangahao dam no 1. DOC said this would take 3-4 hours, it took my group 5-6 hours as we found the river section longer and tougher than expected.
Cute little hut and a nice walk to get there! Unfortunately the toilet door is still broken which is interesting in high winds and rain. The track itself is okay but not fantastic, and quite steep and messy in places.
