This hut was built in 1965 & had been extensively refurbished since, with the addition of a covered verandah & relocating of the main door. The roof was repainted in 2008. The hut replaced the second hut which was reportedly located at a bend up the track. The hut was named after surveyor & explorer, Charles Lewis. The original open fire was replaced by a wood burner at some stage. This was a 'Great Walks' hut, but in November, 2021, DOC removed it, replacing it with 'Lewis Shelter (Hut No. 4)'.Location:
