Notes
This was the second 'Mountain House' structure. Building commenced in 1951 & it was opened in the presence of 100 people on 11 October, 1952; it cost £269 to build (roughly $500 NZD as at 2020) & was 200 yards east of the first, 1907-built hut. It was removed in March 2003 & replaced by a three-sided shelter further up the track towards Powell Hut. Edit Hut

The best feature was perhaps the long drop toilet which was perched on top of a moderate drop. It had no door and afforded quite a view over the valley. Lots of good times.

I remember finding this hut as a kid with my family. If my memory is correct the long drop was pretty close to a cliff. The view from the loo was incredible. A great spot to call out and hear echoes up the valley. Fantastic memories.
