Built in 1959 by the NZFS as a S81 4-bunk design with an open fire. It was located on the true right of the Kokatahi River above the Whakaria Gorge. It was designated for removal in DOC's 2004 Recreation Review but it was deemed salvable by the Permolat group. It's floor & chimney were rotting, but the upper frame was dry & in good shape. Permolat was about to sign a maintain-by-community contract with DOC in 2008, when it burnt down. It was accessed via tracks on the true right of the Kokatahi River, but the NZFS ceased maintaining these in the 1970's. Edit Hut
Dave Elcock had been using the hut as a base for possuming when the hut burnt down. The chimney was dodgy with holes low down. It is assumed that strong winds blew remnant embers from the fire place in to the hut causing it to burn down. Dave discovered the still smouldering remains of the hut after a trip to town and back.
