Built in 1960 by Alan Duncan, a Makaroa local, deer culler & pilot, the hut pre-dates the establishment of MANP in 1964. It was built as a joint venture with Mt Albert Station as a base for venison recovery, recreation & mustering the head of the valley. Later a woodshed & foyer were added on to the side by the Dept. of Lands & Survey. In Nov., 2019, a team led by Rob Brown, with the help of Hawea-based, Black Peak Carpentry, rebuilt the hut, from the floor up, around the existing open fire place. They increased the huts footprint & number of bunks, creating two 4-person sleeping platforms. Dec., 2019, saw the Upper Clutha TC painted the exterior & polyurethane the interior. Later, DOC completed the deck linking the two huts & completed some drainage work around the huts. Edit Hut
